Our Approach

Heal and Grow

Past experiences can leave you feeling stuck. There may be patterns, habits or beliefs that get in the way of the life you want, and it can be hard to see a way through on your own.

You do not have to work it out alone. We help you address the thoughts, feelings and actions that get in the way of your growth, your healing and your relationships. The goal is for you to feel good about every part of your health, whether physical, emotional, spiritual or psychological.

Who We Are

We are a team of counsellors and psychotherapists based in Sarnia and Ottawa, working with people right across Ontario since 2017.

We care about doing this well. One of our core values is continued education, so we stay trained in fresh, neuroscience-based methods alongside the classic approaches that have worked for years. That mix lets us match the method to you, rather than fitting you to one way of working.

Our approach is trauma-informed and health-focused. We support you in making changes that last, toward a healthier, calmer and more meaningful life.

How we Work

Our Methods and Modalities

Unique individuals require tailored tools, and we all draw from several modalities below. Here is a clear look at some of the methods we use in sessions and how each one helps.

Brainspotting (BSP)

Brainspotting is a brain and body therapy that helps with a wide range of concerns, including trauma, anxiety, grief, addiction, physical pain and difficult body sensations.

We offer two types. The activation model uses a pointer to help you find an eye position, a "brainspot," that connects to where a memory or emotion is held. From there, you and your therapist work through and release what has been stuck. You stay in control of the intensity the whole way, and most people come away with a real sense of relief as the triggers behind hard emotions ease.

The resource model works the same way, but instead of processing difficult material, it builds internal strengths like calm, confidence and resilience. It can help with things like feeling settled around new people, self-belief and staying steady under pressure.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is an active, hands-on therapy often used for anxiety, depression, grief, OCD, social anxiety and that feeling of being stuck or unlike yourself.

It starts with getting clear on what you actually want your life to look like. From there, you and your therapist build a road map to get there. Along the way you develop skills like mindfulness, acceptance and the ability to sit with difficult emotions instead of avoiding them, so you can move toward the life you want.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a practical, skills-based approach that helps people better understand and manage difficult emotions, thoughts and behaviours. DBT can be helpful for people experiencing intense emotions, anxiety, relationship difficulties, impulsive behaviours, challenges with boundaries, or difficulty coping when life feels overwhelming.

A central part of DBT is learning that two things can be true at the same time: we can accept ourselves and our experiences as they are, while also working toward meaningful change. Rather than trying to eliminate difficult emotions, DBT helps clients develop skills to move through them in healthier and more effective ways.

DBT skills generally focus on four areas: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness. In therapy, clients may learn practical strategies for calming themselves during difficult moments, understanding and regulating emotional reactions, communicating their needs, setting healthy boundaries and navigating relationships more effectively. The therapist and client work together to identify which skills are most useful and how they can be applied to real situations in the client's everyday life.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a way of processing trauma. We cannot change what happened in the past, but we can change how your brain and body hold onto it.

It uses bilateral stimulation, usually small buzzers that pulse from one hand to the other, to connect stuck memories, feelings and beliefs to healthier information. Over time this reduces triggers and updates old beliefs to the present, moving from "I am in danger" to "I am safe now, I can protect myself." Stuck memories get unstuck, and you are able to heal in the present.

Polyvagal Theory

Polyvagal theory is a way of understanding your nervous system. It describes three main states: social engagement, when you feel calm and safe; fight or flight, when there is too much energy and your system senses a threat; and shutdown, when there is not enough energy left to cope.

Understanding which state you are in helps you and your therapist see how you respond to stress and triggers. From there you can build skills to recognize those responses and spend more time feeling calm, safe and connected.

Internal Family Systems and Parts Work

We are all made up of many parts: different thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Some pull against each other, and some work well together. Internal family systems (IFS) helps you get to know these parts, understand why they are there and work with them rather than against them.

You are the only expert on your own inner world. A big part of IFS is building understanding of why each part exists and finding the best way to work with it.

Narrative Therapy

Narrative therapy starts from the idea that you are the expert on your own life, and that you are not defined by your problems. You have your own values, skills and strengths to draw on.

It looks at your life in a wider context, taking in things like environment, culture, relationships and identity. By telling and re-examining your own story, you can change your relationship with the problem you are facing and see yourself more fully.
